Russia vetoed a UN resolution on Monday calling for a ceasefire in Sudan and humanitarian aid. It was the only Security Council member to oppose the motion.
China, Russia’s ally, supported the resolution, which was drafted by the UK and Sierra Leone. The resolution aimed to stop the conflict and deliver vital aid.
Russian Deputy U.N. Ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy said the Sudanese government should be solely responsible for the situation, defending the veto.
U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield criticized Russia’s obstruction, accusing it of prioritizing political interests over saving lives. British Foreign Minister David Lammy called the veto a disgrace.
Polyanskiy defended Russia’s position, claiming the Security Council was biased and failed to address issues in Gaza. The conflict in Sudan has displaced millions and caused severe food insecurity.
